Location

Our translational facility is situated at the Edinburgh BioQuarter, a unique location which offers commercial facilities co-located with a world-class teaching hospital and university research assets to rival any found in Europe.

Edinburgh BioQuarter is a partnership between NHS Lothian, the University of Edinburgh, Scottish Enterprise and Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. It combines the strengths of three leading medical institutes: Edinburgh University’s Queen’s Medical Research Institute, the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine. As part of the University of Edinburgh’s College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, BioQuarter is also linked with the world-renowned Roslin Institute for Animal biology.

BioQuarter offers all of the key components required to build substantial biomedical businesses in today’s global market whether these are focussed on research, development or commercialisation, drugs or devices, products or services. These include:

  • 1200 world-leading clinical and academic medical researchers
  • Outstanding clinical imaging facilities at the Clinical Research Imaging Centre, or CRIC
  • An 870-bed teaching hospital
  • 230 researchers at the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine (opening late 2011)
  • A 10,000m2 multi-occupancy building: Nine, the BioQuarter

These assets will soon be joined by the Royal Sick Children’s Hospital (2016), and the Brain and Body Institute (2016), bringing the total number of researchers at BioQuarter to 2,000, and the number of hospital beds available to patients to over 1,500.

The BioQuarter is located three miles south of Edinburgh city centre and is easily accessed from all routes in to Edinburgh. We are situated within 30 minutes of Edinburgh International Airport making it easy to link with Europe or the USA.
